Sweet
Crude Oil
Barrels of crude
oil vary according to numerous factors. The main defining characteristics
of sweet
crude are its constituent, low amounts of sulfur (occurring at less
than .5%), hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.
 |
Sweet
crude has a higher viscosity than light
sweet crude yet is more pure and has less sulfur content
than what is considered sour crude (where sulfur levels exceed
.5%).
This type of crude finds its demand primarily in the production
of gasoline for automobile and vehicle consumption.. |
The NYMEX spells out content requirements for trading purposes.
Among the producing countries are:
The North Sea: the United Kingdom and Norway, making Brent
Crude.
African region: in Algeria and Libya to the north, Nigeria to the
west, and the Republics of Angola and the Congo which are more centrally
located.
The Middle East: in Saudia Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait.
Asian Countries: Austrailia, India, China, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Brunei & Vietnam.
North America: Louisiana, producing "Louisiana Sweet" and Texas,
producing "Texas Sweet Light". Also Light Sweet
petroleum comes from a number of U.S. States that include North Dakota,
Montana, and Pennsylvania.
As the name implies, sweet crude does carry a touch of sweetness.
In fact, many drillers of old were accustomed to putting up
the tongue-test on the oil to assess their find (which is definitely
not recommended).
