Sweet
Crude Oil
Barrels of crude
oil vary by a number of factors. The main defining characteristics
of sweet
crude are its low amounts of sulfur (occurring at less than.5%),
hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.
Specifically for trading purposes, the NYMEX spells out content
requirements.
Sweet crude has a higher viscosity than light
sweet crude yet is more pure and has less sulfur content than
what is considered sour crude (where sulfur levels exceed .5%).
Among some of the major barrel
producing countries are Saudia Arabia, Kuwait, the United Kingdom,
the United States (Texas Sweet Light) and Norway.
As the name implies, sweet crude does carry a touch of sweetness.
In fact, many drillers of old were rather accustomed to putting up
the tongue-test on the oil to assess their find (but is definitely not
recommended).
